Other Wizard of Ads partners (link opens a new window) and I were having a conversation about mind mapping. Some know what it is. Some never heard of it. Some use it all the time (myself included). To help introduce the idea, I pulled back the curtain and created a 5-minute explanatory video.
Because you’re awesome, you can view the same video I shared with my parter-in-laws.
What Mind Mapping Is
Mind mapping is a visual way to organize information
I was taught mind mapping in the late 80’s and 90’s when I was going through special education. I learned it for memory recall and mental processing of information. To this day I find it helpful.
An Example of Mind Mapping in Business
Several years ago I was requested to explain what retargeting is and how they can use retargeting. With the way my mind works, ideas were shooting back and forth with a cascading waterfall of knowledge about retargeting. With all that information I entered the randomness of thoughts in to a mind map. I was then able to organized it in such a way that the information naturally flowed.
In a mind map, you’ll find clusters of information tied together with lines. Each line represents a path of ideas and concepts.
You can cram a lot of information in a mind map. And for those who have trouble understanding/reading a mind map, you can export a map into a standard looking outline like you made in high school.
Mind Maps Can Be Used For…
- creating and tracking strategy for a client
- book outlining
- blog writing
- video ideas
- content outline on a web page
- to do lists page based on your roles in life
- organizing a story
- organize a presentation
- taking notes on a book
- plan a vacation
- tracking team members
If there’s information to get down, you can use a mind map to organize it.
One Hint About Mind Mapping
The one thing that I have learned with mind maps through the years I’ve used them is to use one file or one piece of paper per topic. Having multiple mind maps in one document can get confusing really fast. For many people, there is so much information they become overloaded and the information becomes hard to track.
Mind mapping can be a very powerful way to dump information, organize information and get creative with getting thoughts out of your head.
